Governors in the Great Lakes Region Applaud Congressional Passage of a Compact to Protect the Great Lakes and St. Lawrence River Basin
September 23, 2008
The House of Representatives has passed a Joint Resolution consenting to the Great Lakes - St. Lawrence River Basin Water Resources Compact. The Senate has already passed a similar action, and President Bush has said that he will sign it, thus completing the legislative process. The Compact is the result of five years of negotiations between the Governors of Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Minnesota, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. The agreement will establish a framework for the sustainable use of the Basin, including controls on new water diversions. A similar agreement was previously reached between the states and Ontario and Quebec.
