National Association of Legislative Information Technology (NALIT)

2008 Professional
Development Seminar

Louisville, Kentucky
September 3-6, 2008

Seminar Overview

The NALIT Professional Development Seminar is an annual event that brings together state legislative information technology professionals interested in advancing the effectiveness and efficiency of state legislatures through the use of technology.  NALIT members attend the seminar to share solutions and discuss innovative uses of technology.  The seminar provides a combination of educational sessions, demonstrations and exhibits, and networking opportunities.

This year's seminar again offers, at no additional cost, a one-day preconference in-depth training seminar on security issues for managers and technical staff.  Other seminar sessions also will be offered in two tracks: one for technical specialists and one for managers and others interested in policy and management issues related to legislative information technology.  Participants are welcome to attend the sessions in either track that interest them.  Speakers for the seminar combine the knowledge of industry experts and the experience and expertise of legislative information technology staff.  This year's seminar will include sessions on GIS, wireless personal communications, VoIP and using web applications for core legislative functions, among others.

Integral to the seminar is the opportunity to compare experiences with other legislative information technology staff in roundtable sessions and small group discussions.  These sessions give participants the opportunity to share information and advice with colleagues about information technology projects.

The NCSL Legislative Information and Communications Staff Section (LINCS) will hold its seminar concurrently with NALIT, with some sessions held jointly.  Please join us for a unique learning experience and opportunity to meet with colleagues from other states.

Social Events and Area Attractions

 Kentucky State Capitol

The NALIT seminar will include technology briefings and a tour at the Kentucky State Capitol on Friday morning, September 5.  Friday afternoon, join us for lunch and a tour of the Buffalo Trace Distillery.

The NALIT Seminar provides many opportunities for attendees to discuss legislative IT issues with their peers, including in the relaxed atmosphere of social events.

This year, the NALIT seminar will include great after-hours events--an opening reception at Lucky Strike Lanes in the Fourth Street Live! entertainment district near the hotel and an exhibitors reception at the hotel on Thursday evening. Our capstone event on Saturday evening is a dinner cruise aboard the Belle of Louisville.   A beautifully maintained steamboat and National Historic Landmark, the Belle gives passengers a memorable journey back to the time when she carried passengers and goods to ports all along the beautiful Ohio River.

Visit the Kentucky host state seminar web site for information about Louisville attractions and activities.

Sponsorships and Exhibiting Opportunities

Organizations and businesses participating in the NALIT Professional Development Seminar may contribute to the meeting by exhibiting or sponsoring seminar events. Exhibits highlight the latest in information technology products and services for state legislatures. Exhibits will be held during a reception on Thursday, September 4. Sponsorship of events or general support of the conference brings you recognition through meeting materials, onsite signage, and through the distribution of materials at the seminar. There are several types of sponsorship, including three major sponsorship levels: Terabyte, Gigabyte, and Megabyte. Contact Pam Greenberg, NCSL Liaison to NALIT, at 303-364-7700 ext. 1413, for more information about exhibits or sponsoring.
