Training and Orientation
NCSL provides unique and practical training for legislators and staff across the country. We have national training seminars and workshops, but we also tailor-make individualized educational programs for states upon request. We offer top of the line leadership training for legislators and staff and we offer training opportunities at all our major meetings. We also have a series of "effective legislator" CDs that are designed especially for new members. NCSL also offers a wide range of needs assessment, training, and exchange services to international clients.
New Member Orientation is a critical opportunity for state legislatures to help their new members and NCSL research shows that states are giving their programs a makeover. Our web pages explain how states plan their programs, what training methods they use and how they teach substantive, procedural and technology issues. We also interview key new member orientation planners in the state legislatures.
Staff Sections and Networks give state legislative staff the chance to exchange information with their counterparts around the country. NCSL has special groups for bill drafters and legal staff, clerks and secretaries, leadership staff, public information officers, information technology specialists, fiscal staff, program evaluators, services and security staff and research and committee staff. NCSL also has a special network for staff who work on education issues.
The Leadership Institute is a dynamic training opportunity with some of America's top leadership experts. The institute is a joint project of NCSL and the State Government Affairs Council and is designed for legislators who show outstanding leadership promise and the ability to effect change.
The Legislative Staff Management Institute is an eight-day intense management program for senior-level legislative staff. Held at the University of Southern California Capitol Center in Sacramento and California State University Sacramento, attendees learn about leadership, conflict resolution, strategic planning and much more.
NCSL has created a series of Legislator Training CDs that provide advice from experts on key topics. Experienced legislators, staff and others give tips on how to master the legislative process, chair a committee, understand a state budget, serve your constituents, build consensus and deal with the media. All the CDs are provided free to legislators and staff.
NCSL Training for legislators and staff is a core service we provide our members. We understand how legislatures operate and we know the legislative world with all its quirks, customs, traditions and personalities. That's why we can design and provide training for any type of program that a legislature might need.
The NCSL Meetings Calendar provides legislators and staff with an easy reference to all of the training and educational opportunities at our workshops, seminars and meetings.
