Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit ‘05
Co-sponsored by National Conference of State Legislatures, The Council of State Governments, and the Rural Policy Research Institute

The 3rd annual Legislative Agricultural Chairs Summit will be held January 28-30, 2005 in Memphis, Tennessee. This Summit offers an opportunity for legislative leaders on agriculture and rural development to discuss the major issues affecting agriculture and rural communities, including international trade, biotechnology, animal and livestock concerns and rural job development. In addition to presentations by national experts, the chairs to will be able to share ideas and get to know their counterparts in other states.
Agenda
The Summit will begin Friday, January 28 at 3:00 p.m. with a tour of Agricenter International and a reception at Ducks Unlimited. The program will end Sunday, January 30 at 1:00 p.m. An optional 2006 Steering Committee Planning Session will follow the Summit. See Attached Agenda.
Pre-Summit Workshop for New Chairs
A new chairs orientation is being sponsored by NCSL. Legislative Agricultural Chairs co-convenors Rep. Doug Jones and Rep. Roger Thomas will discuss the challenges of chairing committees, dealing with the minority party and opposing viewpoints, and other difficulties legislative chairs face. In additional, Prof. Otto Doering will offer an orientation on national agricultural policy, including a presentation on the upcoming Farm Bill. This session is open to all legislators. Invitation to the Summit 
Attendance at this Summit is by invitation only. Legislative leadership is nominating one legislator from each chamber to attend the Summit. If additional legislators would like to attend, please contact Joanne Stroud at NCSL (303/364-7700).
Registration and Costs
The Summit organizers will cover the meeting costs for invited legislators, including the tour and reception, the sleeping room, group meals, ground transportation in Memphis (receipt required) and meeting materials. Legislators need to be responsible for their travel to and from Memphis. Limited funds are available to assist with air travel on a case-by-case basis.
